Degradation of polyethilene glycol by the integration of chemical and biological treatment
, Tecnologia del Agua, Vol: 21, Pages: 55-62, ISSN: 0211-8173Biodegradation of polyethylene glycol 10,000 molecular weight or higher presented problems, therefore suggesting that integration of chemical and biological treatments, to achieve complete degradation from these sizes of polyethylene glycol may be advisable. Integration of wet air oxidation and aerobic biological treatments of polyethylene glycol 10,000 was investigated. The organic compound, used as the sole carbon and energy source, was partially oxidized in a high pressure reactor achieving a 7% of total organic carbon removal. Enhanced biodegradability was assessed by comparing total organic carbon removal using an Aerobic Continuous-flow Stirred Reactor fed with untreated original organic or previously oxydized samples. The reactor operated at steady-state at loading rates of total organic carbon of 69 mg L-1 d-1 for untreated polyethylene glycol 10,000, and 520 mg L-1 d-1 for wet air oxidation-treated polyethylene glycol 10 000, reaching yields of 68% and 82% of total organic carbon removal, respectively. Even using a retention time 8-fold shorter, total organic carbon removal from the wet air oxidation-treated sample was higher than that from the untreated one. Therefore, previous wet air oxidation treatment may improve efficiency of conventional biological treatment of industrial waste waters containing this organic compound.

Polyethylene glycol aerobic biodegradability

Biodegradability of polyethylene glycols of different molecular weight was assesed, due to the recalcitrant natures of these polymeric compounds, produced in many industrial wastewaters, hardly biodegradable. Using discontinuous cultures, inoculated whith and adapted inoculum for polyethylene glycols 10.000 for more than two years, the range from polyethylene glycols 200 to 10.000 could be eliminated. It has been found that biomess adapts to polymers of lower molecular weight, but is insufficient for those of greater weight.
