Current source ballast for high power lighting emitting diodes without electrolytic capacitor
, IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference), Pages: 1968-1973An LED driver requiring no electrolytic capacitor in the whole power conversion process is presented. It consists of two power conversion stages. The first stage is a buck converter operating in discontinuous capacitor voltage mode, so that the input current is continuous. It is used to deliver a regulated current for the second stage. The second stage is a current-fed inverter, in which the semiconductor switches are operated at constant switching frequency and constant duty cycle of 0.5. The power supplying to the LED string is regulated by controlling the duty cycle of the main switch in the front-stage buck converter. The two stages are interconnected by an LC filter, which is designed to attenuate harmonics at double of the line frequency. Instead of using an electrolytic capacitor for the filter, a polyester capacitor of better lifetime expectancy is used. An 18W experimental prototype has been built and tested. © 2008 IEEE.

Evaluating the capacity value of wind generation in systems with hydro generation
Wind generation is envisaged to be a major contributor for meeting the targets for renewable energy and environment in various countries. However, the limited contribution of this generation source to system reliability requires increased capacity margins (generation capacity above system's maximum demand). This paper investigates the potential impact on the capacity value of wind generation due to the presence of hydro generation in systems. In order to quantify the adequacy of the overall generation capacity and capacity credit of wind generation in wind-hydro-thermal systems a new methodology based on loss of load expectation (LOLE) is developed. Various studies performed through implementing the new methodology establish that the capacity credit of wind generation can increase by up to 10% due to the support of hydro generation.

Computation of a reference model for robust fault detection and isolation residual generation
, Journal of Control Science and Engineering, Vol: 2008, Pages: 1-12, ISSN: 1687-5249This paper considers matrix inequality procedures to address the robust fault detection and isolation (FDI) problem for linear time-invariant systems subject to disturbances, faults, and polytopic or norm-bounded uncertainties. We propose a design procedure for an FDI filter that aims to minimize a weighted combination of the sensitivity of the residual signal to disturbances and modeling errors, and the deviation of the faults to residual dynamics from a fault to residual reference model, using the H∞-norm as a measure. A key step in our procedure is the design of an optimal fault reference model. We show that the optimal design requires the solution of a quadratic matrix inequality (QMI) optimization problem. Since the solution of the optimal problem is intractable, we propose a linearization technique to derive a numerically tractable suboptimal design procedure that requires the solution of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization. A jet engine example is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Intermittent renewable generation and maintaining power system reliability
, Generation, Transmission & Distribution, Vol: 2, Pages: 82-89, ISSN: 1751-8687There have been attempts, using various approaches, to assess the additional cost of running an electricity system when intermittent renewable generation is used to provide a significant proportion of the energy. The key issues are the difference, in statistical terms, between the resource availability of the intermittent source and conventional generation and the contribution the intermittent source can make to meet the system peak demand while maintaining system reliability. There is considerable agreement over the capacity credits that can be attributed to renewable energy sources, that is the amount of conventional capacity that renewables can reliablydisplace, yet the implications for costs have proved more controversial. Approaches to calculate changes in overall system cost are examined and an expression for the additional cost that intermittent generation imposes on a system that is attributable to its intermittent nature is identified. Further, it is shown that this expression can be reconciled with approaches that look at intermittent renewables on a stand-alone basis and factor in the additional costs of ‘standby’ capacity. It is shown that the main source of divergence between estimates of the cost of intermittency is the load factor implicitly assumed for the conventional plant used as a reference. There is only one consistent way to impute the costs of intermittency when the unit cost of intermittent plant is being compared with that of baseload generation plant.

AC Network State Estimation Using Linear Measurement Functions
, IET Journal Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Vol: 2, Pages: 1-6The real/reactive power and current magnitude measurements can be accounted for in an AC network state estimator using linear measurement functions. The nonlinearity in the conventional AC state estimator equations is transferred from the measurement functions into a system of nonlinear equality constraints which is independent of the measurement set. The new format of equations entails two advantages. First, it can be easily integrated in optimisation routines which employ first- and second-order derivative functions. Second, the linear measurement functions can benefit from scaling techniques which are well documented in the linear programming literature. This research details the implementation of a least absolute value state estimator employing the new format of equations. The optimisation method is based on a primal-dual interior-point method that can accurately account for zero injection measurements and power directions. Numerical testing is used to validate the approach for networks with measurement sets that are (i) conventional and (ii) have a high proportion of current magnitude measurements and power signs.
