Tracking of piecewise constant references for constrained nonlinear systems

    , Pages: 886-891

The paper addresses tracking of a piecewise constant reference for a nonlinear system subject to control and/or state constraints. The proposed controller, called dual-mode, extends to the nonlinear case an approach formerly introduced for linear systems. The dual-mode controller is based on the knowledge of the set of feasible state-setpoint pairs and operates in two different modes: as a regulator if the current state is feasible for the desired set-point, or attempts to recover feasibility as quickly as possible whenever feasibility is lost due to a set-point change. The difficulty of constructing the feasibility set in the state-setpoint space for a nonlinear system is overcome by embedding the original system into a family of uncertain (polytopic) linear systems.

An evaluation of the spectral characteristics of switching converters with chaotic carrier-frequency modulation

, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, Vol: 50, Pages: 171-182, ISSN: 0278-0046

This paper presents an evaluation of the spectral characteristics of switching converters with a chaotic carrier-frequency modulation scheme (CCFMS). By incorporating a Chua's circuit (CC) into the pulsewidth modulator for driving the switches, three modulation schemes, including the standard pulsewidth modulation scheme, periodic carrier-frequency modulation scheme, and CCFMS, can be realized with the CC in equilibrium, limit cycle, and chaos, respectively. The property of frequency spreading in CCFMS is studied by using statistical analysis method. The developed model is applied to formulate the power spectral densities of the input current and the output voltage of the three basic dc/dc converters under CCFMS. Theoretical predictions are verified with experimental measurements.

Use of Chaotic Switching in Electronic Ballasts

, IEICE Transactions on Fundamentals of Electronics, Communications and Computer Sciences, Vol: E86-A, Pages: 2203-2208, ISSN: 0916-8508

This paper investigates the use of chaotic pulsewidth modulation (CPWM) scheme for electronic ballasts to eliminate visible striations (appearance of black and white bands along the lamp tube) in fluorescent lamps. As striations can be eliminated by superimposing a small amount of dc current or low frequency ac current to the electrodes to produce composite current waveform through the lamp, the underlying principle of this work is based on the fact that the power spectral density of the lamp current will be rich of low-frequency harmonics at the output of inverters switching with CPWM. Most importantly, the lamp life will not be affected with chaotic switchings, because the lamp current crest factor is found to be similar to the one with standard pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and the lamp current does not have dc component. The effectiveness of eliminating striations is confirmed experimentally with a T8 36W prototype.

Recent developments of planar printed circuit board (pcb) transformer technology

, HKIE Transactions Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Vol: 10, Pages: 35-41, ISSN: 1023-697X

Rapid developments of planar magnetics in recent years have prompted new applications of planar transformers in electronic industry. The low-profi’e features of planar magentics make them attractive in many electronic systems that have stringent thickness requirements. In this article, some recent progress of planar PCB transformers and their applications are described. Comparisons of canventional and pianar transformers are reviewed. New trend of integrated electronic packaging in power electronic systems is briefly discussed. © 2003 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
