Dimming control and characteristics of high-frequency operated metal halide lamps

, PESC Record - IEEE Annual Power Electronics Specialists Conference, Vol: 3, Pages: 1155-1160, ISSN: 0275-9306

Dimming control and characteristics of high-frequency operated metal-halide (MH) lamps are described. Lamp performance based on two ballast topologies is compared. The dimming range and stability control of the MH lamps are addressed. Dimming range from 100% to about 30% has been achieved. It is found that the combination of ballast topology and dimming method can affect the dimming performance.

A novel electrode power profiler for dimmable ballasts using DC link voltage and switching frequency controls

, PESC Record - IEEE Annual Power Electronics Specialists Conference, Vol: 1, Pages: 192-197, ISSN: 0275-9306

A novel electrode power profiler for dimmable ballasts using series-resonant parallel-loaded inverter is presented. Dimming of fluorescent lamps and control of the electrode power are achieved by simultaneously adjusting the dc link voltage and the switching frequency of the inverter. The current gradient along the electrode, which is due to the distributed lamp current property on the electrode, is deliberated in formulating the power and voltage models of the electrode. As the electrode heating relies on two near-orthogonal current components including the lamp current and the resonant tank circuit current, a simple feedback control is developed to derive the electrode power. Reduction of the electrode power (due to the decrease in the lamp current) during dimming is compensated by increasing the switching frequency of the inverter, in order to increase the resonant tank circuit current. Experimental results of a T8 36W prototype are verified with theoretical predictions.

A randomized voltage vector switching scheme for three-level power inverters

, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 17, Pages: 94-100, ISSN: 0885-8993

In this paper, a feasibility study of a randomized space vector switching scheme for three-level inverters is reported. Based on the traditional space vector concept for pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter, the sequence of the space vector is randomized in this scheme. The overall vector, resulting from the randomization, is mathematically identical to that of the traditional space vector. It has been found that the randomized scheme can effectively spread the switching noise over a wide frequency range and at the same time keep the steady-state link capacitor voltage balanced. The proposed scheme has been implemented in real time in a digital controller and its features have been experimentally confirmed.

3D simulation of SAR induced by mobile phones in the human head

This paper presents a thorough investigation of 3D calculation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution in a realistic model of the human head exposed to electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phones. The calculation was made using the FDTD. The source was modeled with a power of 600 mW, as a monopole fed with a current of 300 mA, and variable frequency in the range of 800 MHz to 1.8 GHz. The human head model has a precision of 1.11 mm x 1.86 mm x 1.11 mm in the x, y and z directions, respectively; and is composed of 12 different tissues: air, bone, ERL, brain, skin, muscle, fat and eye (composed of cornea, anterior chamber, lens, vitreous body and sclera). This very fine model allows accurate SAR calculation in different tissues which may have been overlooked in other models.

Lamp arc resistance modelling of high-intensity-discharge (HID) lamps

, IEE Proceedings: Science, Measurement and Technology, Vol: 149, Pages: 45-48, ISSN: 1350-2344

Based on a simplified approach to the prediction of acoustic resonance frequency distribution, a frequency-dependent lamp arc model of a low-wattage metal-halide (MH) lamp is presented. Verified with measurements, this approach provides a useful lamp-arc-resistance model for electronic ballast designers to predict and simulate the unstable frequency regions of high-intensity-discharge lamps and to design appropriate control for the ballast.
