AB - The first report of food allergy desensitization was in 1908, before the first description of a diagnostic for food allergy. It has taken almost 100 years for food allergy to move from passive management of avoidance to a more proactive approach including prevention and treatment. In parallel, this has been matched by recognition of eosinophil gastrointestinal diseases, which were first described in the 1980s (although eosinophilic esophagitis was itself described in 1978). As we celebrate 10 years of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, we take the opportunity to look into the future and speculate how our practice may develop over the next decade. The first published reports of food-allergic individuals can be found at the turn of the 20th century, and it is likely that the phenomenon had been recognized before that (although the suggestion that food allergy existed in antiquity has been largely disproven).1,A2 It is humbling that the first report of food allergy desensitization was published in 1908,3 before the first description of a diagnostic for the condition.4 In the decades that followed, there was almost complete inertia in terms of science informed practice with respect to food-related atopic disease. However, the past 10 years has at last seen significant research endeavors in better understanding the epidemiology, prevention, and potential treatment of food allergy.
