How can we green the economy with agriculture?

Agriculture for Impact's Gordon Conway attended a FAO/OECD expert meeting to discuss this question on 5-6th September in Paris. The meeting peer reviewed the ongoing FAO/OECD studies on Greening the Economy with Agriculture (GEA).

Gordon Conway participated in an expert panel on ‘What Role for Science and Technology in Greening the Economy with Agriculture? A copy of his speech is available here.

Dow Jones Newswires reported from the event and some of this coverage can be accessed here.

This FAO/OECD meeting is part of FAO’s preparations for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 4-6th June 2012. This event is also referred to as Rio+20.

Rio+20 has three objectives: securing renewed political commitment to sustainable development; assessing the progress and implementation gaps in meeting already agreed commitments; and addressing new and emerging challenges. So far, UN member states have agreed on the following two themes for the Rio +20: green economy within the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and institutional framework for sustainable development.

To contribute to Rio +20, FAO is examining how the green economy translates into the food and agriculture sector.

More Wall Street Journal coverage from the BIAC panel event on Tuesday in Paris is now live.  There is great video coverage from the lunch as well as an accompanying written piece.
