Professor Stephen Smith gave an invited presentation to the Sustainable Organic Resources Partnership (SORP) Seminar

Professor Stephen SmithProfessor Stephen Smith gave an invited presentation to the Sustainable Organic Resources Partnership (SORP) Seminar at the 16th European Biosolids & Organic Resources Conference on the 15th November at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. The title of his talk was ‘Organic Contaminants – Facts and Fiction about Emerging Compounds and Proposed EU Limits in Wastewater Biosolids’. Please see attached PDF presentation.

Professor Stephen Smith attended the third meeting of the Council of Canadian Academies Expert Panel on Sustainable Management of Water in Agriculture (see May news for further information on the activities and purpose of the Panel) in Ottawa on 28-29 November.

The Environment and Water Resources Engineering Section welcomed Professor Thomas Young from the University of California, Davis, who visited on 7th December, hosted by Professor Stephen Smith. Professor Young met with various members of the Section during the day to discuss mutual research interests and presented a seminar on his recent research and its implications, entitled ‘Organic Contaminants and Water Quality: Concerns and Appropriate Actions’

As part of its mission to support and increase the recycling of organic wastes, WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) has published a report by Dr Hannah Rigby and Professor Stephen R Smith on the suitability of anaerobic digestate in areas other than its most common outlet of agricultural application.  Professor Nigel GrahamProfessor Nigel Graham recently visited the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (7th and 8th December) as an international member of the Advisory Board for the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI) (www.ntu.edu.sg/NEWRI). NEWRI represents NTU’s efforts over the last two decades as a major contributor to Singapore’s environment and water technology R&D activities. The institute comprises four major centres of excellence and over 300 research staff and students.
