Dr Alexandros Roussopoulos (Civil and Environmental Engineering MPhil 1971)

On 16th December 2008 Alkis Roussopoulos died from cancer.
Alkis was born in Athens in 1943. He graduated from the Civil Engineering School of the National Technical University of Athens in 1967. He continued his studies at the Engineering Seismology Section of the Department of Civil Engineering of Imperial College, obtaining his M.Phil and later at the NTUA, obtaining his Ph.D on Earthquake Engineering.
He lectured at the NTUA for several years. He served as scientific coordinator of the UNESCO program for the seismicity of the Balkans, as President of the European Earthquake Engineering Association (1978-1982), as Vice President of the Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (1981-1985) and as elected member of the House of Representatives of the Technical Chamber of Greece and of the Scientific Committee of Civil Engineers of the TCG (1976-1981).
He also served as General Secretary (1981-1985 and 1986-1989) and as Deputy Minister (1985-1986) of the Ministry of Transport. Leaving the Ministry of Transport, he continued his work in the transportation sector, particularly in the field of road safety and he served as President of the Road Safety Committee until 2005, as well as Director of Southeastern Europe of UNIDO (1997-2002).
Alkis was a founding member of the Imperial College Alumni Association of Greece
He lived happily with his wife Lea for 35 years and he was fortunate to take a great pride of his son Thanassi as a lawyer.
Alkis was a very good friend and a great supporter of ICAAG.
