Annual meeting of the CGCA Association
CGCA’s Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday 20th May 2009. The outgoing President, Professor Dame Julia Higgins, gave a review of her eventful year in the post, before introducing her successor, Mr John Loughhead, CEng, FIET, FREng, FCGI, and overseeing his formal election as President for 2009-10.
After his election, John took the chair for the remainder of the business, including the election of officers and General Committee members. New appointments were made to the positions of Membership Secretary (Mr John Collins - Civil Eng 2002), Younger Members’ Secretary (Mr Mark Mearing-Smith - Mech Eng 2006), and to that of year group representative for Group IV (Mr Colin Kerr - Civil Eng 1988).
In a brief meeting of the new General Committee, trustees and ordinary members were appointed to the board of the Old Centralians’ Trust, whilst Mr Nigel Cresswell (Civil Eng 1971) was co-opted as Web Designer.
Once the formal business was complete, the President’s Evening commenced with a talk on “Engineering our Energy Future” given by Professor Nigel Brandon, FREng, FCGI, Shell Professor of Sustainable Development in Energy, and Executive Director of the Imperial College Energy Futures Laboratory.
This was followed by a social gathering and buffet supper in the staff common room of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology, ACE Extension Building.
